About the Conference

 

The Repower World Summit is an event dedicated to discussing and promoting ways to decarbonise centralised coal-based systems by replacing them with low-emission generation sources at their existing sites. The global trend of ‘repowering’ coal to clean energy, using biogas, biomass, geothermal and nuclear technologies, is driven primarily by clear technical, economic and social arguments for maintaining energy activities in urban areas that have historically depended on energy systems for their development and social well-being.

The two-day event will serve as a platform for the exchange of experiences in activities related to the decarbonisation of coal-based energy systems, including power plants, combined heat and power plants and heating plants. The first day of the conference will feature speakers from government and local authorities.

Representatives from energy companies, heating companies, developers and technology providers as well as independent experts will share their experiences and visions for the implementation of decarbonisation processes. On the second day, the discussion will continue with international experts referring to studies and reports on repowering. So far, the event has attracted the interest of various industrial partners and international organisations, including companies, research institutes and universities from the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, China, South Korea, India and Indonesia. The conference is organised by the Silesian University of Technology, which is actively involved in designing and promoting effective ways to decarbonise the national economy, including the energy sector. The DEsire team, which is directly involved in the organisation of the event, argues that the transformation of coal-based energy sources into environmentally friendly ones – preferably with comparable production capacities – is best suited to the concept of a just transition, especially in coal-dependent regions. Such investments also address the need to support the national electricity system and local heating systems, thus contributing to energy security.
